Female genital cutting vs. Female genital plastic surgery

A while ago I read the book of Fawzia Kaazinga "Did they hear you when you were crying?". It is the real life story of a young girl from Togo, who fled her country in order to escape their tribal custom of being cut. Now to clarify this issue at the beginning: This is not an Islamic rule, not even male circumcision is mandatory in Islam. The male one is based on the Jewish religion, and originally goes back to the Babylonian custom to "mark" their sons in cases of murder and kidnapping. Muslims adapted this rule, but it is nowhere in the Koran. The female one is based on tribal law, which is usually applied in African countries and has numerous other reasons (They want to protect women is one of the reasons, another mentions that women would have pain during sexual intercourse and hence, they would not cheat on their husbands.)I had not heard about this practice until a couple of years ago when I heard about the "Desert Flower", another real life story of a young girl escaping her African country. Well, anyways, to get back to the main topic. It is performed on young girls who usually have no idea what is happening to them. The girl is usually hled by her mother or older sisters, aunts, etc., basically a close female relative, while the cutting party is between their legs to cut of most or parts of their outer genitals. I forgot another reason: they say that this way a woman looks clean, basically using ascetics to put the girl through this pain. Now, personally I am completely against this practice. Not for what they do, but for how they do it. I had to write a paper in one of my law school classes about women's rights, which referred to this topic. I respect other countries laws and customs, BUT, and here is where that big but comes: as long as it does not put health to danger and as long as it respects humanity.Usually this custom is done with dirty and rusty razor blades, or broken glass pieces, women and girls die due to the heavy bleeding, or later on during child birth. Forget about the pain they will have during sex or menstruation. Now, a couple of days ago, I read in a medical magazine about female genital plastic surgery. I am not sure, but I think I must live on Mars... I had heard that people go an increase or decrease their bust size, their butt size, tuck their tummies, increase or decrease their lips, nose, lift their eyes etc., but plastic surgery in your private parts??? The article immediately got me. Now I was curious that people actually have opinions how I have to look like in my private parts. Well, to open up your eyes, if you as virgin-like as me, before I read this article: women increase the size of the outer labia, or decrease their inner ones, they change the size of their clitoris and also have the option to change the shape of the entire part. O.K., I thought, making sure the magazine does not fall out of my hands. There are plastic surgents who specialise in this area. And then I read the "Why do this surgery"-part. The reason: because it looks nicer, cleaner and is supposed to enhance the sexual desire. "Ohhh Kayyyyy", I said! Now you tell me: what is the difference between these two cases???
One is done in African countries, the other in the west. If you said this: ding ding ding, you win the first prize. But... hate to tell you, this is not all. Second similarity: they are both done due to aesthetic reasons. So why is it against women's rights and a reason to fight in Africa and a reason for Plastic surgents to advertise in the western world? From what I understood at both places it is done for the beauty of women, sexual reasons, and pretty much done to the same areas (FGC has different procedures, depending on they country of procedure.). I kept thinking for a while and came to the following conclusion: Here women decide on their own to undergo this surgery and accept the pain they might have later. There, the girls are mostly forced in having a "surgery". Why did I put the last word in quotations? I will tell why: because here it is done in a sterile environment in a hospital, antibiotics are taken and the woman is told to rest, not have sex for up to 4 weeks after the procedure, and not to lift anything heavy in order to protect the area. There the women have the cuts done in public places, held by the woman they trust the most, their mother, and do not have any sedation. They actually have to feel every second of the pain, have no antibiotics, and no warnings for after the procedure. And the most important reason is probably the freedom of choice for the women. Here they do it voluntary and there they are forced. Regardless of this, I believe the countries who believe in female Genital cutting should enforce their tribal law and pass it as a statutory law, in order to reach the safety level for women. If the procedure is legal, it will be done in the safe environment of a hospital. Additionally, the women should have a certain age in order to decide whether they want to give their genitals that particular beauty boost or not.
In conclusion, it should all be about the safety and freedom of women. How about putting that on top of the priority list?
