Anyone who knows me, knows that I truly love fashion. Not necessarily whatever gets on the runways, but certain items and styles are absolutely necessary for my happiness.
However, there is a point where you have to balance the love for fashion with the ridiculous. The question comes up: how far would I go for a piece of clothing, a certain shoe or a handbag? Well, price-wise higher than I should. Yes, I admit that. Quantity wise-guilty again, also higher than I should. Quality does not count at this point, since I believe that quality is essential to no matter what you do in life.
But- here is my question: would I torture, kill and slaughter for fashion? I could write an immediate NO. But honestly, is that true? Just looking around in my room, I see two pairs of leather shoes, a suede jacket, and a leather handbag. Therefore, any person who refer to those and say: Yes, Nina, you bought leather and suede and your purchase is also causal to an animals death.
Now, while I know that there are alternatives to those leather shoes and bag and jacket, I want to tell you a story:
Last Saturday my daughters and I went to a shopping spree in the city. We had a lot of fun, wandering 5th avenue and going from one designer store to the next. Until we came across a store, where a lot of people were standing with huge boards and yelling at everyone who had the intention of entering the store. I can not possibly pass on a good demonstration to fight for the rights of the oppressed. So I went and asked the woman what the story was. First I thought she used to work for this store and they kicked her out, or they did not let them enter etc. (Anyone living close by NYC knows that the guard in front of the store checks you out first, before they open the door…). But the story she told me and the pictures she showed me made my blood freeze. She was working for the above mentioned organization: Win Animal Rights. She was telling me something I had heard but never wanted to believe 100 %. Obviously I knew that animals are killed in order to have their fur (Something, which I think is pathetic. I do own two fur pieces, which I inherited and I never wear them.) Recently I read about animal testing for medical purposes. (Also something I do not fully agree, but I guess it is essential in a way.) But transporting creatures in an inhumane manner to slaughter and stripping of their fur while they are still alive, goes beyond human action. I mean, come on, don’t we constantly say that we are the best of the best? Basically crème de la crème of all creatures? So where is our brain at this point? Torturing the animals in order to wear them? Don’t misunderstand me, I don’t think it’s better to treat them well and kill them for this purpose either. But fashion houses I know display these furs in their windows. What is that supposed to be? Their trophies? Based on the motto: the animals could not defend themselves, so now they are on display, since we do have the money to wear them?
I guess at this point my love for fashion ends. Not only did I donate some money to the woman, but I also became a member in this organization.
